In the Northern Hemisphere, holiday style revolves around cozy sweaters and layering. But in summery Australia, it’s all about staying cool. Holiday and New Year’s Eve fashion features breezy dresses, shorts and beachy looks to beat the heat during their hottest months.
Thigh Society recently expanded into Australia, so we caught up with two Australian fashion creators to get the scoop on how they’re ending the year in style. Here’s what Aussie women are wearing:

How would you describe your holiday and New Year's Eve style? What have you worn in recent years?
Comfort with a touch of glam. I love a good flowy maxi dress that’s not only easy to move in but keeps you cool in the hot weather. Add some gold accessories and you’re good to go. You also can’t go wrong with sequins on New Year's Eve!
What do you plan on wearing this year?
This year, since I’m pregnant with my second, I’m leaning towards a white linen dress with a statement red lip. The silhouette is perfect for my bump, and it makes me feel and look great with minimum effort.
What do you like to do for the holidays and New Year's Eve?
I love spending quality time with family over the holidays. Being in Australia, we have lots of barbecues and beach trips. New Year's Eve is usually a bit more festive, a small gathering with our friends or family to watch the fireworks, a cheeky drink or two, but not this year since I’m pregnant. I’m getting really good at making mocktails!
What do you think defines Australian holiday style?
Lightweight fabrics, fun prints, white linen, gold accessories… It’s all about staying cool and comfortable in the summer heat, but you want to look chic too. Minimum effort pieces are my go-to, styles you can throw on with rattan accessories and a bold lip and look like you’ve spent hours getting dressed when you’ve really just thrown your hair into a slick bun and popped on a cute fit.
What do you like to wear the day after a holiday event to lounge and relax?
Let’s be real, the day after a big holiday is all about lounging. I love lounge sets that are comfy enough to wear around the house but stylish enough to wear outside if you need to pop down to the shop.

How would you describe your holiday and New Year's Eve Style? What have you worn in recent years?
Light and breezy. With it being Summer in Australia, New Year’s Eve is often nice and hot, and into balmy evenings. This means lots of linen and lightweight fabrics, nothing that will stick to you, and for me personally, lots of color! In previous years, this has meant linen or cotton matching sets in bright colors or fun patterns. Also, nothing beats an all-white linen look, midi and maxi dresses, or shorts with cute matching tops are my favorites! Always paired with fun accessories and cute, comfortable shoes.
What do you plan on wearing this year?
This year I’m again feeling the effortless chic vibes of a white linen look with cute flat shoes and fun accessories, something timeless that can go from day to night. I haven’t picked specifics for my outfit yet — I better hurry up — but I have some things on a wishlist. I am a huge fan of backless tops so that’s going to be up there decision-wise.
What do you like to do for the holidays and New Year's Eve?
Be at the beach as much as humanly possible. I love to spend all day there. I love to go for nighttime picnics at sunset. On New Year’s Eve, I watch the fireworks on the beach. You could say that I’m beach obsessed!
What do you think defines Australian holiday style?
Easy-to-throw-on outfits where you still look put together. Lots of outfits that go from day to night, from beach to the bar type vibes. Simple and versatile with lots of linen.

I actually bought this maxi T-shirt dress recently which is so fab for any lounging around, the comfort levels are off the charts. It’s really just a giant floor length T-shirt. Without any styling it definitely looks like pajamas.
